The Stone Quarry – Tor Hörlin – 1951 - 54 x 36 cm

Modernist oil painting of a landscape with grass and rocks and a stone crusher. Oil on panel, signed and dated (1951).

This landscape is characterized by clean color panes and an atmospheric depiction of light. Hörlin embraces bold colors (ochres and purples next to the gray of the rocks) and form, emphasizing that the ambiance of the painting is more important than the perfect depiction of the stone crusher.

The painting is cleaned and comes with a complimentary  wooden frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

About the Artist:

Swedish painter Tor Hörlin (1899-1985) trained at the technical evening school and the Althin's painting school. He then studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1919 to 1923. He was later head teacher at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in decorative painting from 1947 to 1957 and a member of the Public Art Agency Sweden from 1943 to 1949.

He has executed a number of major decorative paintings in both public and private buildings, as well as glass, mosaic and wall painting at Kockums mechanical workshop in Malmö. 

Hörlin had several solo exhibitions and has participated in Swedish exhibitions in Copenhagen, Oslo, Rome, Venice, Tehran and Baghdad. His art is represented at the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as at the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Malmö Museum, Norrköping Art Museum and Örebro County Museum.
