An expressive mid-century modernist abstract composition of a beach with fisherman’s gear. Signed, oil on canvas.
A confident, expressively handled still life built from the working clutter of a Swedish fishing harbour: a woven basket, coiled rope in faded coral red, glass jars, and a tin pail in cool sea-green, piled together against a pale strip of sand and a flat blue horizon. A dark cormorant perched on a mooring post anchors the composition from above, its wings loosely blocked in with the same thick, direct brushwork — almost palette-knife handling — used throughout. In the distance, small sailboats sit quietly on the water, giving the piece real depth despite its tightly cropped foreground.
The painting is cleaned and comes with a complementary, well-suited and restored silver vintage wood frame. Both painting and frame are in great vintage condition.
Size: 57 x 48 cm (with frame)
About the artist:
Elisabeth Brunnström (1908-1988) was a Swedish painter working through the middle of the twentieth century; she is held in the collection of the Helsingborg Museum, though — like many regionally active artists of her generation — her training and exhibition history were never absorbed into the standard Swedish art-historical lexika. What survives is the work itself, and this canvas argues for a painter with real conviction.
